Tome & Tavern › AI Dungeon Master

An AI Dungeon Master for 5E, on a 3D table

Tome & Tavern is a free 5E tabletop RPG that runs in your browser. Turn on the AI Dungeon Master and Claude tells the story, voices the characters and reacts to what you write. The game keeps the rules: the dice, the monsters, the checks and the maths.

The AI tells the story. The game keeps the rules.

Most AI game masters are a chat window: the same model invents the story, decides the rolls and keeps the score, and sooner or later it forgets your hit points. Here the work is split. The rules come from the SRD 5.2.1, the fifth-edition rules under a Creative Commons licence, and the game runs them: it rolls the d20, applies the modifiers, moves the monsters and tracks every hit point. The AI Dungeon Master gets the result and narrates it.

So a natural 1 stays a natural 1. From our test bench, Strength (Athletics), DC 12, rolled 1:

GM

Brunilde slams into the door with the full weight of her chain mail, but the fallen bricks don't budge an inch. All she gets is a sore shoulder and a cloud of dust that makes her cough. What do you do?

The door stays shut. The roll decides, not the GM.

No spoilers

The AI GM knows the whole adventure, including what you haven't found yet. The game checks every line before you see it. On our test bench a draft named a villain the players hadn't met; the game stopped it and the GM rewrote the line without the name. You only read what your heroes could know.

Solo or with friends

A 3D table, not a chat log

Every hero is a 3D figure that idles, walks and fights on the map, weapon in hand. You make your hero in the browser, pick from 21 figures, and sit down. Draw your own dungeon in the map editor, or bring a universal VTT file, and the heroes walk into it in 3D.

In the game: the AI game master calls for a Wisdom (Survival) check and the d20 decides.
From the 36-second clip on the home page: the AI GM calls for a check, the d20 decides.

What it costs

The game is free: making heroes, the 3D table, playing solo and playing with friends. The AI GM runs on Claude and costs money per reply: on our test bench, about $0.06 a reply with Claude Sonnet. The host sets a spending cap for the table and the other players pay nothing.

Questions

Is the AI Dungeon Master free?

The game is free: heroes, the 3D table, solo play and playing with friends. The AI GM runs on Claude and costs money per reply: on our test bench about $0.06 a reply with Claude Sonnet. The host sets a spending cap and the other players pay nothing.

Does the AI follow the 5E rules?

It doesn't have to remember them: the game runs the rules from the SRD 5.2.1, rolls the dice and tracks hit points. The AI narrates the result and can't change a roll.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Send the table code: 6 seats, up to 8 if the host adds them, each player on their own phone or PC. Voice and chat are inside the game.

Which AI runs the game?

Claude, by Anthropic. The turns on our home page come from our test bench with Claude Sonnet, words unchanged.

Do I need to know the rules?

No. The tutorial teaches you as you play. On your turn the game shows what you can do and does the maths.

Is it in English?

Yes: menus, rules, hero creation and the tutorial, with the official English 5E terms. The two free campaigns and the Shop are still in Italian; they're next.
